911 Salmon Fish 5-1-2008

Secretary of Commerce Carlos M. Gutierrez Friday declared a commercial fishery failure for the West Coast salmon fishery due to historically low salmon returns. Also today, NOAA’s Fisheries Service issued regulations to close or severely limit recreational and commercial salmon fishing in the area.

“The unprecedented collapse of the salmon population will hit fishermen, their families, and fishing communities hard, and that is why we have moved quickly to declare a fishery disaster,” Gutierrez said. “Our scientists are working to better understand the effects that ocean changes have on salmon populations. We are also working closely with fishing communities to improve salmon habitat in river systems to support sustainable fishing.” More

Did You Know?

Did you know that there are over 100 new conventional coal power plants proposed for construction in the United States? Many Americans think coal power is a bygone way of life, but in fact, it still provides about half of our nation's electricity! Coal power is America's single biggest source of heat-trapping emissions, contributing more to global warming than all the country's automobiles, SUVs, trucks, buses, planes, and ships combined! The Union of Concerned Scientists is working to build a demand for clean alternatives to dirty coal. Think about wind power. Ask your political leaders about it today! Contact your representative now.

House Approves Bill to Prevent Genetic Discrimination

On May 1, the House of Representatives passed legislation [H.R. 493] to protect patients against discrimination by health insurance providers and employers based on their genetic makeup, predisposition to disease, or chronic condition.  The House approved the measure on an overwhelming vote of 414 to 1.  The President is expected to sign the bill into law.

Speaking in support of H.R. 493, Rep. Levin said, “Newly developed genetic testing holds great promise in treating illness.  So we need to take steps to ensure that fear of discrimination by employers and health care providers does not discourage people from undergoing genetic testing or participating in clinical studies.”

Monitoring AIDS Treatment by Physical Symptoms is Effective

Result is almost as good as therapies based on advanced laboratory tests, a new study finds

25 APRIL 2008 | GENEVA -- When millions of HIV-infected people in poor countries began receiving advanced drug therapies, critics worried that patient care would suffer because few high-tech laboratories were available to guide treatments. But according to a study being published today in The Lancet, these concerns are as yet unfounded. In fact, the study indicates that when clinicians use simple physical signs of deteriorating health -- such as weight loss or fever -- these doctors can provide therapies almost as effective as those relying on the most advanced laboratory analysis.

NIH Study-Brain Study May Lead to Improved Epilepsy Treatments 4-16-2008

Using a rodent model of epilepsy, researchers found one of the body’s own neurotransmitters released during seizures, glutamate, turns on a signaling pathway in the brain that increases production of a protein that could reduce medication entry into the brain. Researchers say this may explain why approximately 30 percent of patients with epilepsy do not respond to antiepileptic medications. The study, conducted by researchers at the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences (NIEHS), part of the National Institutes of Health, and the University of Minnesota College of Pharmacy and Medical School, in collaboration with Heidrun Potschka’s laboratory at Ludwig-Maximilians-University in Munich, Germany, is available online and will appear in the May 2008, issue of Molecular Pharmacology. PRIORITY CAMPAIGNS Protecting the Chesapeake Bay Shoreline After a major effort by many environmental organizations and the O'Malley administration, the General Assembly passed legislation in April to update the Critical Area Act. The new law increases enforcement and closes loopholes.

Specifically, it:

• Gives the Critical Area Commission authority to update and enforce the law.

• Allows the state to revoke the licenses of builders who knowingly violate the law.

• Increases the no-build buffer zone for new subdivisions in rural areas from 100 feet to 200 feet.

• Tightens the rules for where new housing can be located.
